Same-day couriers in the UK have changed more in the last two years than in the previous decade. Driver shortages, regional hub closures and a wave of new e-commerce sellers have reshaped what counts as a competitive service window — and what businesses can reasonably promise their customers.
If you're booking same-day in 2026, three things matter more than headline pricing: cut-off time, vehicle type, and what happens when the first attempt fails. We break each one down with real-world numbers.
Cut-off times. A '5pm cut-off' usually means the booking has to be confirmed and paid before 5pm — pickup itself can be anywhere up to 19:00. For genuinely urgent jobs, look for couriers with a rolling cut-off (we offer this on MOVANA Same-day) where each booking is assessed against live driver availability rather than a fixed daily deadline.
Vehicle type. Small van, large van and Luton make up most UK same-day capacity. The price difference between a small van and a Luton can be 3–4x — book the smallest vehicle that fits, and remember that volumetric weight applies. A single bulky-but-light parcel often costs more than a heavier compact one.
Failed first delivery. This is where reputable couriers separate from the long tail. Confirm in writing what happens if the recipient is unavailable: do they hold for a second attempt, return to depot, or leave with a neighbour? On MOVANA we hold for one re-attempt as standard, with a photographed delivery card left as proof.
If you're sending high volumes, consider opening a business account. Most carriers — ourselves included — offer 8–15% off published rates plus consolidated weekly invoicing, which makes reconciliation dramatically easier than processing single-shipment receipts.
